Rihanna's Super Bowl Look Paid Tribute to Style Icon André Leon Talley

Rihanna’s Super Bowl halftime performance had us all talking about everything from the music, to the pregnancy reveal, to the flying stages, to the fashion.

The performance was a retrospective of many of Rihanna’s greatest hits from throughout her career, however, she also paid tribute to another legend who passed away in January 2022 at the age of 73.

Rihanna sang many of her hits, including “B*tch Better Have My Money,” “We Found Love,” “Work,” “Umbrella,” and “Diamonds.” It was an excellent return to the stage for the singer.

During a part of her performance, Rihanna put on a giant over-sized, floor-sweeping red leather Alaïa puffer jacket that was reminiscent of legendary Vogue editor André Leon Talley’s iconic signature red Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat.

Talley’s Instagram account immediately recognized the tribute and posted about it to Instagram along with some lyrics from Rihanna’s song “Umbrella.”

“When the sun shines, we’ll shine together. Told you I’ll be here forever… said I’ll always be your friend,” the post says along with a pic of Talley in his jacket and Rihanna in hers.

Rihanna and Talley were actually longtime friends during Talley’s lifetime. The two frequently would talk on the Met Gala red carpet, like when she wore her iconic yellow Guo Pei gown to the 2015 Met Gala.

Talley’s actual brick red sleeping bag coat is up for auction through Christie’s, along with several other of the late fashion icon’s items. The auction for the items begins on February 15.
