Kelvin Gemstone and Keefe Chambers are TV's favorite gay Christian couple—here's why
What a couple!
Tony Cavalero and Adam DeVine on The Righteous Gemstones.
HBO
Danny McBride's hilarious comedy seriesThe Righteous Gemstones ended on a high-as-heaven note with the series finale that aired on Sunday, May 4.
The HBO comedy series features John Goodman as televangelist Eli Gemstone, who has three children: Danny McBride (as Jesse Gemstone), Edi Patterson (as Judy Gemstone), and Adam DeVine (as Kelvin Gemstone).
For the past five years, the show has consistently been one of the funniest and most creative comedies on television. A big part of that comes from the relationship between Kelvin Gemstone and his best friend-turned-husband, Keefe Chambers, played by Tony Cavalero.
Kelvin and Keefe went through quite a journey while on the show: They began as a virgin youth pastor and his former satanist best friend, then became partners, "best dude friend of a cousins," boyfriends, and — at least — husbands.
Their relationship given the show some of its biggest laughs, and some of its most heartwarming moments.

Kelvin rescues Keefe from "Satan worshippers."
Toward the end of season 1, Kelvin struggles with having faith in himself and tells Keefe he's no longer worthy to lead him. A distraught Keefe goes back to his satan-worshipping former friends, where he becomes "The Baby" and is locked in a sensory deprivation gimp suit.
He's there until Kelvin realizes how much he needs Keefe, rescues him, and brings him back under his wing.
Keefe helps Kelvin get dressed.
Earlier on, in season 2, Kelvin tries assert his dominance over his father, Eli, and challenges him to a fight, only to have both of his thumbs broken. A distraught and disabled Kelvin retreats to his house, where he's unable to do just about anything for himself.
Thankfully, Keefe is there and is more than happy to put Kelvin's Tommy Johns underwear on for him, zipping up his vest, and even giving him a boop on the nose.
"Smut Busters."

After Kelvin comes back to his job as a youth pastor, he and Keefe start the Smut Busters: A team dedicated to preventing people from the "sins" of porn and sex addiction.
One day, when the two of them get to a porn shop to buy out all its merchandise so that no one else can, they finally talk about what they've been doing.
When Keefe says they're going to "let 'em know we are watching. Judging their lifestyles, you know, what they do in their spare time," Kelvin has a revelation.
He doesn't want to judge people by what they do in their bedrooms and suggests, "We could just let this one go." He adds, "Maybe this is the kind of situation where you live and let live," a phrase Kelvin claims he came up with just then off the top of his head.
It's a cute moment, and a big step for the two characters as they learn to accept their love for each other.

When parents of the church's youth find out about Smut Busters and meet Keefe, they don't trust him and demand that he be kicked off the youth team, forcing him to get a job as a carpenter.
In an act of love and reconciliation, he makes matching wooden rocking chairs for himself and Kelvin, but when he goes to deliver them, he thinks he's been replaced by Taryn, a new youth worker.
"You're exactly me," he tells her. "By Kelvin's side, planning physical acts, talking about the children... a replicant," Keefe declares.
Kelvin invites Keefe to "Cousins' Night."

Season 3 sees the Gemstones meeting up with their cousins, Chuck and Karl. When Eli suggests that they should do a "Cousins' Night," Keefe offers to help Kelvin by making his famous sausage dip. He also tells Kelvin that he can "put it in a special container to keep it warm" so that he can carry it into the family event.
When Kelvin mentions that Keefe can go to the event, a stunned Keefe reminds Kelvin that he's not a real cousin in this family. "I know you're not a cousin," Kelvin tells him, "You're my… Best dude friend of a cousin."

At the so-called "Cousin's Night," Keefe not only brings his sausage dip, but also his tools for fire dancing. Showing off for the whole family, Keefe is in the zone, and Kelvin loves every second of it.

The series finale of The Righteous Gemstones features a storyline of Kelvin being in the running for the Top Christ Following Man award — which he wins thanks to his love with Keefe and the empowerment he's found through it.
Earlier in the competition, Vance Simpkins called out Kelvin for being gay and tried to argue that he can't be both gay and a Christ-following man. Later, Kelvin brings that up in his speech, recalling that he's always felt different and spent his whole life trying not to be.
"If the real me is good enough for God, then it's good enough for everyone," he declares. "Different is awesome, the proof of God's work, the range of his talents. My name is Kelvin Gemstone, and I'm a different kind of man."
"A beautiful man," Kelvin says while looking at Keefe in the audience. "A gay, Top Christ Following man."
And marriage!

Kelvin tells Keefe in the series finale of The Righteous Gemstones that he's no longer afraid of many things — including marriage. He then pulls out a ring in his reconstructed and revamped childhood treehouse, and pops the question.
Fans also get to see their wedding in the series finale, which is just as fabulous, absurd, and beautiful as their entire relationship has been.
The Righteous Gemstones is streaming on Max.
