Gay dads: We love them!

Father's Day is an opportunity for people across the United States to celebrate the men who raised them — whether or not that connection was biological. This is also an extra-special day for those who have two gay dads.

Gay fathers are some of the best dads in the world, and many of them have important stories that should be told. In recent years, LGBTQ+ representation for fathers in television has grown to include some beloved characters and performances.

Whether they are main characters on a TV show or just make quick appearances during an episode, these gay TV dads left a lasting impression on us.

'Glee'

Of course, someone as obsessed with Broadway divas would have two dads! On Glee, Jeff Goldblum (Hiram) and Brian Stokes Mitchell (Leroy) played high school singer Rachel Berry's two gay dads.

'The Loud House'

The character Clyde McBride in this popular Nickelodeon cartoon has two adoptive fathers, Howard (Michael McDonald) and Harold (Wayne Brady).

'Duck Tales'

The Disney animated series DuckTales features the character Violet Sabrewing was the daughter of Indy and Ty, who wore matching "I'm with Dad" shirts.

'Danger Force'

Tommy Dickie and Brandon Claybon played Justin and Dustan — a gay couple who adopted a child named Ellis — in an episode of Danger Force on Nickelodeon. A supervillain kidnaps their child, who is later rescued by Captain Man and returned safely.

'Modern Family'

Mitch Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) were loving, if somewhat neurotic, fathers of Lily and Rexford Tucker-Pritchett on the long-running Modern Family.

'American Dad'

Terry Bates and Greg Corbin had a daughter together named Libby (or Liberty Belle, depending on who you ask) on the animated series American Dad.

'Six Feet Under'

David Fisher (Michael C. Hall) and Keith Charles (Michael St. Patrick) had their ups and downs on Six Feet Under as a gay couple who adopt two children: eight-year-old Anthony and 12-year-old Durrell, in the groundbreaking HBO series.

'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power'

George (Chris Jai Alex) and Lance (Regi Davi) were the proud pops of Bow, one of Adora's best friends on She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

'Brothers & Sisters'

Before he was a real-life daddy, Luke Macfarlane starred in the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters where he played Scotty Wandell, the eventual husband of Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys). In season 4, the couple attempts to have a baby via surrogacy, but are unsuccessful. They adopt a girl named Olivia and later adopt their son, Daniel.

'The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder'

Billy Porter andZachary Quinto played Randall Leibovitz-Jenkins and his husband, Barry Leibovitz-Jenkins, the proud fathers of Maya in this Disney series revival The Loud Family: Louder and Prouder.

'Grace & Frankie'

Gay dads can come in many forms, as shown by the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, where Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen play Sol and Robert, a longtime pair of best friends who come out to their wives as gay, leave their marriages, and get together. They both have adult children who must learn to adapt to the new family dynamics.

'Mid-Century Modern'

Matt Bomer plays the dreamy and ditsy Jerry in the hilarious sitcom Mid-Century Modern about three older gay friends who move in together in Palm Springs. While Jerry unfortunately doesn't get to see his daughter (Billie Lourd) very often, he happens to be working as a flight attendant on one flight that she is on in an episode, and they have a touching conversation.

'The Dragon Prince'

Another animated series with gay dads is this Netflix fantasy show. The elf couple, Runaan and Ethari, never officially adopt Rayla, but while they are caring for her, they treat her like their own daughter.

'The Brady Bunch'

Of course, no list of gay TV dads would be complete without America's original fave gay dad himself, Mike Brady. So what if Mike was the proud (allegedly) cis-straight father of a blended family of six children and was the first TV husband to share a bed onscreen with his TV wife.

Actor Robert Reed was gay, and his portrayal as Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch showed generations of children and families the meaning of fatherhood.
